Description

“The Betsy Ross Flag” – Wall Art by Steven Michael Photography and Art.

The first American Flag with 13 Stars and Stripes was sewn by Betsy Ross. But in order for her to receive that honor, she would be cut off from her family, and suffer the loss of the love of her life, John Ross.

Betsy was born January 1, 1752 the 8th of 17 children. Being raised a devout Quaker, she would attend Quaker school 8 hours a day where she would learn to read, write, and skills, such as, sewing. After she completed school, her father sent her to learn upholstery. While there, she would meet and fall in love with John Ross, the son of an assistant Episcopal rector at Christ Church. Quakers frowned upon interdenominational marriages and the penalty for such a thing was to be cut off emotionally and economically from your community. Betsy and John married in 1772, and she was immediately expelled from her Family and Community. From that point on, you would find Betsy sitting in pew 12 every Sunday at Christ Church, and it was there, sitting in the adjacent pew, she would meet George Washington, the new commander-in-chief, who would play a very important role in the Betsy Ross we all know.

John and Betsy opened up their own upholstery store and utilized her skills in needlework. When the Revolutionary War started, materials became hard to come by, causing the business to suffer and forcing John to join the Pennsylvania Militia. In mid-January, 1776, while guarding an ammunition cache, John Ross was seriously wounded in an explosion. Betsy tried to nurse him back to health, but he died January 21st and was buried in the cemetery at Christ Church. In June of 1776, three men visited her, one being George Washington where they discussed her sewing the first American Flag. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress adopted the 13 star flag as our first National Flag.
