Description

“Old Glory” – American Flag Wall Art by Steven Michael Photography and Art.

In 1831, Captain William Driver, a shipmaster from Salem, Massachusetts, was presented with an American Flag while leaving on one of his many voyages.  As he began to set sail, and the flag began to fly in the ocean breeze, Captain Driver exclaimed, “Old Glory!”.  The Captain retired to Nashville, Tennessee in 1837 and Old Glory remained in his pocession.

When the Civil War broke out and Nashville seceded from the Union, the Rebels were determined to find and destroy “Old Glory”.  Although they searched, they were not able to find the Captains flag.  In 1862, when the Union captured Nashville, Captain Driver ran home and began to rip at the seams of his bedcover where inside the quilt-top appeared, “Old Glory”. The Captain gathered the flag and took it to the Capitol, and although he was 60 years old, he climbed to the top of the tower and raised the American Flag. It was at that time soldiers began to cheer and would adopt “Old Glory” as one of the names for the American Flag.
